The Outdoor Pursuit 16-Hour First Aid Course Level 3 VTQ is aligned with the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Statement of Good Practice on Outdoor First Aid at Band 3. 


Recognised by HSE and will help meet the first aid training requirements as set out in The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

16-Hour Outdoor First Aid Course Outline: 

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a first aider: Learn what a trained first aider can and should do in an outdoor situation.
  • Assess an emergency situation: Learn how to assess an outdoor first aid situation in order to give the appropriate assistance and manage a casualty until help arrives. 
  • Manage unresponsive casualties (inc CPR): Learn how to provide first aid to unresponsive casualties, including how to administer CPR should it be required.
  • Recognise and assist a choking casualty: Choking can kill. delegates will understand how to recognise the signs of choking and how to assist a choking casualty.
  • Dealing with emergency situations away from emergency service assistance: Learn how to manage casualties when an emergency response is delayed. 
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding: From minor cuts to significant bleeding, you will learn how to control and dress external bleeds.
  • Manage catastrophic bleeding: Learn how to recognise and manage catastrophic bleeds, using specific trauma dressings. 
  • Manage a casualty who is in shock: Learn how to quickly spot the symptoms of shock in a casualty and administer first aid.
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with burns: From minor scalds to major burns, learn what to do to provide effective first aid to a burn casualty.
  • Administer first aid for a casualty with various injuries: The outdoor environment can cause a variety of injuries. Learners will understand how to provide first aid for a range of injuries common in the outdoors. 
  • Perform injury assessments: Learn how to assess a range of injuries and treat them accordingly. 
  • Administer first aid for a casualty with eye injuries: Learn how to effectively administer first aid for a variety of eye injuries.
  • Administer first aid for a causality with sudden poisoning: Learn how to spot the signs and deal with casualties with suspected sudden poisoning.
  • Administer first aid for a causality with anaphylaxis: Identify and react to the signs of anaphylaxis in a casualty.
  • Administer first aid for a causality with asthma: Understand how to provide effective first aid to a casualty with asthma.
  • Administer first aid for a causality with a major illness: Understand the signs and symptoms of various major illnesses, and how to effectively respond.
  • Ongoing assessment and monitoring of casualties: Learn how to assess and monitor a casualty's vital signs.

  • How long is your outdoor first aid training course?
    This outdoor first aid course is completed in two days with 16 hours of teaching across both days. This can be offered as a shorter one-day course with learners undertaking online modules prior to the classroom day


  • How many people can attend this outdoor first aid course?
    We can tailor any training course to your organisation’s needs, including the number of attendees. However, there is a maximum number of 12 people per qualified trainer. If you have larger groups we can accommodate this with extra trainers. Get in touch to discuss your needs.


  • What clothes should I wear for this course?
    Our outdoor first aid training is a practical course so we recommend wearing clothes and footwear that are comfy, easy to move around in and suitable for an outdoor setting, including waterproofs & boots.
