The PFA is a level 3 qualification suited for any businesses which involve childcare in some capacity, though is suited to anyone wanting to learn how to administer first aid to infants and children, adult first aid is also covered in this course.


The course syllabus meets the requirements of The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).


The Statutory Framework for the EYFS is a document published by The Department for Children, Schools and Families, It applied to early years childcare in England and Northern Ireland. It outlines the need for minimum staff levels who require a current PFA certificate.


If you are struggling to free up 2 days for your staff to complete the training this course can also be offered blended, meaning that learners can complete 6 hours of training online from home at their own pace, then attend a one-day, 6-hour training course with one of our trainers.


The Paediatric First Aid training course is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.

Paediatric First Aid Course Outline:

This Level 3 Paediatric First Aid Training Course will cover the following elements: 

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider: You will learn what a first aider is required to do and what your responsibilities are in a given situation.
  • Assess an emergency situation: Learn how to assess any emergency situation in order to give the appropriate first aid and help ensure the best outcome.
  • Manage an infant/child casualty who is unresponsive (inc CPR): Learn how to provide appropriate emergency first aid to unresponsive child, infant &  adult casualties, including how to administer CPR should it be required.
  • Recognise and assist a choking infant/child casualty: Choking can kill. Learners will understand how to recognise the signs of choking and how to effectively assist a child, infant and adult choking casualty.
  • Administer first aid to an infant/child casualty with external bleeding: From minor cuts to significant bleeding, you will learn how to control and dress external bleeds for child, infant and adult casualties. 
  • Manage an infant/child casualty who is in shock: Learn how to quickly spot the symptoms of shock in a casualty and administer first aid.
  • Administer first aid to an infant/child casualty with burns: From minor scalds to major burns, learn what to do to provide first aid to a burn casualty.
  • Administer first aid for an infant/child casualty with bites, stings & minor injuries: Learn how to recognise the symptoms of bites, stings and minor injuries and provide effective treatment. 
  • Administer first aid for an infant/child casualty with injuries to bone, muscles and joints: Learn how to spot the difference between bone, muscle & joint injuries and how to treat them effectively. 
  • Administer first aid for an infant/child casualty with injuries to the eyes, ears and nose: Learn how to effectively administer first aid for a variety of eye, ear and nose injuries. 
  • Administer first aid for an infant/child casualty with an acute condition or sudden illness: Understand the signs and symptoms of various major illnesses, and how to effectively respond.

  • How long is your paediatric first aid training course?
    This paediatric first aid course is completed in two days with 6 hours of teaching on both days. If you opt to blend the learning with online modules, you will complete the course with 6 hours of pre-learning from home, and one day in the classroom which will take around 6 hours in total. Our trainers will come to your office on the day, all you need to do is turn up ready to learn!

  • How many people can attend this paediatric first aid course?
    We can tailor any training course to your organisation’s needs, including the number of attendees. However, there is a maximum number of 12 people per qualified trainer. If you have larger groups we can accommodate this with extra trainers. Get in touch to discuss your needs.


  • What clothes should I wear for this course?
    Our paediatric first aid training is a practical course so we recommend wearing clothes and footwear that are comfy and easy to move around in.
